Hungary, president of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe
On May 21, 2021, in Hamburg, Germany, Hungary took over the presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe from Germany. Min. Szijjártó: We do not forget about the security challenges amidst COVID
“The main challenge ahead of the global community is the coronavirus pandemic, but it should not mean that we do forget about the security challenges which we have to face all around the globe” – Minister Péter Szijjártó said at the virtual UN high-level Replenishment Conference for the Peacebuilding Fund, on 26 January 2021. He also announced the deployment of 15 additional troops to the already existing Hungarian contingency in the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
President Áder addressing UNGA75
23 September 2020, in his pre-recorded national statement, President Áder raised attention on the devastating impact that humankind has had on the Globe, especially in the 21st century. He raised the General Assembly's attention on the increasing number of water-related disasters and unresponsible waste management that cause severe damages both in societies and the ecosystem as a whole.
Security Council Arria-Formula Meeting: “Cyber Stability, Conflict Prevention and Capacity Building”
On 22 May, Estonia as the President of the Security Council held an Arria-formula meeting on cyber issues. Member States as well as the briefers (including Izumi Nakamitsu USG) showed their support for a better coordination, cooperation, capacity building and confidence building measures for a stable, open, free, accessible and safe cyber space. Ambassador Katalin Bogyay also emphasized the importance of the two UN lead forums – GGE and OEWG – in the context of international security and the role of the OSCE and its Informal Working Group on Development of Confidence-Building Measures – which is chaired by Hungary since 2017.
